Every set is absolutely breathtaking in its detail and styling, every outfit is perfectly curated, every note in Danny Elfman’s score achieves the perfect balance between silly and menacing. Catherine O’Hara deserves endless praise for her possessed lip-sync of Harry Belafonte’s Day-O. Michael Keaton has never been better than as the titular “bio-exorcist” and Winona Ryder as Lydia Deetz has become one of the most iconic gothic characters in cinema history. An existential contemplation on the afterlife, a gothic fashion showcase, a meditation on social alienation, a hilarious pastiche of horror tropes: For a movie that at times is unapologetically juvenile, Beetlejuice somehow spans several genres and succeeds in each category. They’re not good enough stories for anything else and I thought you might get a kick out of them.Describing Beetlejuice as a horror-comedy isn’t inaccurate, but the movie’s so much more than that. The other thing was, you know how in a darkened theater the movie screen is the brightest thing in the room. I was literally falling out of my chair in the theater. The story is Pee Wee’s Big Adventure is one of the funniest movies of all-time. ![]() He said three words to me one time and I nearly swallowed my fucking tongue. And make no mistake, I do not know Andy Warhol nor have I ever talked to Andy Warhol. I saw Pee Wee’s Big Adventure for the first time with Andy Warhol. But number one on my list of Tim Burton movies will always be Pee Wee’s Big Adventure (Name Dropping Celebrity Story Alert). I absolutely loved both Danny DeVito and Michele Pfeiffer’s Penguin and Catwoman. I didn’t like Jack Nicholson’s Joker or Prince’s soundtrack. I put Batman Returns above the first Batman on my list. This is the type of scene that made me fall in love with movies. I watch this clip every once in a while for a pick-me-up (along with the final scenes from Cinema Paradiso & City Lights). I also really liked his Vincent & Frankenweenie short films but will only list full-length movies. That movie is SO Burton’s film – it doesn’t matter that he wasn’t the director. Okay – I WAS going to include only the movies he has directed but I just cannot exclude The Nightmare Before Christmas. I figured it was time to do a full updated list of My Top Ten Tim Burton Movies. Happy Birthday to Tim Burton, who turns 58 today.
